Gartner has just delivered its Hype Cycle on emerging technologies in 2022. Three main themes emerge from this ranking, immersive experiences (Web3, metavers, super apps, NFT), AI automation (the generation of machine code learning, causal AI,…) and the cloud (extended Finops, data observability, OpenTelemetry,…).
This is always a moment awaited by CIOs and directors in charge of innovation. Gartner has just published its Hype Cycle dedicated to emerging technologies for the year 2022. This barometer has studied approximately 2,000 emerging or take-off technologies and has kept some of them to place them on its trend curve (see image below). Remember that this includes several stages in the life cycle of a technology (birth of innovation, peak of exaggerated expectations (or hype), the abyss of disillusion, the slope of enlightenment and the plateau of productivity ).

On the first part of the curve, Gartner identifies three main themes comprising several innovations. Among them, we find in particular the immersive experiences which integrate pell-mell the metaverse dear to Mark Zuckerberg, the Web3 (of which some doubt the relevance of the concept), the NFTs, the decentralized identity. Within this theme, there are also super apps, unique applications that centralize several functionalities such as payment, e-commerce, collaboration (example WeChat in China). In addition, the Hype Cycle evokes the digital twin of a customer, to simulate and anticipate consumer behavior in advertising campaigns or navigation on a site. On the HR side, the firm is seeing the development of talent marketplaces take off within AI-based companies to find the right profiles and the best skills.
AI automation and optimization of cloud services
Precisely AI is at the center of the second theme pushed by Gartner. For faster adoption, according to the firm, it is time to move towards automating certain tasks and in particular AI models. In this context, the notions of foundation models (reference models, which have been trained on large amounts of data and can adapt to different domains), causal AI (integrating contextualization) or autonomous systems are in the process of being to emerge and will certainly find their way to growth in the years to come.
Finally, the last topic addressed, the cloud or rather the optimization of services. At the heart of this issue, several technologies and innovations are emerging such as extended FinOps. Traditionally, FinOps is responsible for optimizing the costs of cloud services, but the scope of the function could extend to other activities, for example around decarbonization. This theme is also in the Hype Cycle through the concept of sustainable cloud which joins the current debate around digital sobriety. Still on the cloud, the development of platforms dedicated to industries takes off in the same way as the cloud data ecosystems approach, with information around the multicloud. Data remains very present through observability or the arrival of the OpenTelemetry standard. Finally, security is not forgotten with dynamic risk governance or mesh cybersecurity architectures.
